The Great Pyramid of Giza is the last of the seven wonders of the ancient world still standing. Six million tonnes of stone, cut and stacked with a precision that still isn't fully explained. And the only physical evidence of who built it is a few strokes of red paint on the ceiling of a chamber nobody was meant to see.
That paint has never been scientifically tested. Not in 1837, when it was found. Not in the century of X-rays and spectrometers that followed. Not now. The entire chronology of ancient Egypt's most famous monument rests on a mark that no one has ever put under a lens.
Here is how it got there.

A colonel in a hurry
Richard William Howard Vyse arrived at Giza in 1836, a British army colonel and former MP with a private income and an interest in pyramids. He first visited the plateau in 1835, went away, and came back to dig in earnest. He joined an excavation already being run by an Italian named Giovanni Caviglia, fell out with him, and dismissed him in the first week of January 1837.
By early 1837 Vyse was months into the work with nothing to show for it. Funds were running low. Other people's digs on the plateau were turning up finds. His were not. He needed a discovery with his name on it, and he was not inclined to wait for one.
On the night of 12 February 1837 he examined a crack in the ceiling of Davison's Chamber, a known void above the King's Chamber. A reed pushed about two feet into the gap and kept going — there was another space up there. Over the next three and a half months, Vyse blasted his way up to it with gunpowder, opening four new chambers stacked one above the other. He named them after friends and public figures: Wellington's, Nelson's, Lady Arbuthnot's, and at the top, Campbell's.

The marks appear
Wellington's Chamber, the first one open, had no markings at all. Neither did Davison's, below it. But from Nelson's Chamber upward, red ochre began to appear on the blocks: quarry marks, directional notes, the names of work gangs. On 6 May, in Lady Arbuthnot's Chamber, more red inscriptions — including what would be read as a form of the name Khufu. Campbell's Chamber, at the very top, opened on 11 May. The hieroglyphs inside it were copied about two and a half weeks later, in the last days of the month.
One of those marks, on the south ceiling of Campbell's Chamber towards the west end, is a cartouche. It is the single most reproduced piece of evidence in Egyptology: the name of the pharaoh who built the Great Pyramid, written on the Great Pyramid. Before Vyse, no such thing existed. Greek and Roman writers from Herodotus onward had attributed the pyramid to "Cheops" by report, for two thousand years. Nobody had ever found his name on the stone.

The 1:1 copies of the marks were made by one man, Mr. Hill — 28 drawings, sent to the British Museum in London, where they still are. You can see them by appointment. They have never been published in full.
The case that it was faked
The researcher Scott Creighton laid out the forgery argument in The Great Pyramid Hoax (2016) and has built on it since. The shape of it:
Motive. Vyse was under real financial and reputational pressure and had found nothing. Means. The red ochre wash used for quarry marks — a simple iron-oxide paint the Egyptians called moghra — was still being made and sold in Egypt in 1837. Vyse's own book says so. Opportunity. Every one of the marks appears only in the four chambers Vyse personally blasted open. None on the wall he broke through to reach them. None anywhere else in the pyramid.
Then there is the detail Creighton calls "the Lost Symbol." Perring, Vyse's engineer, drew one block in Lady Arbuthnot's Chamber and recorded a sign on it. Hill drew the same block, within a day, and that sign is simply not there. Hill's facsimiles are the record everyone has trusted ever since.

The awkward part: the paint itself can't easily settle the question. Ochre is iron oxide, a mineral. It contains no carbon, so it can't be radiocarbon dated unless there's an organic binder mixed into it — and whether one survives here has never been established, because no one has looked.
The case that it's real
This is where the episode plays fair, because the counter-argument is genuinely strong.
The cartouche and quarry-mark styles in the Vyse chambers match known Fourth Dynasty conventions — the same use of red ochre, the same forms — found at other sites across the plateau. Khufu's name doesn't appear once in the chambers; variants of it appear a dozen times or more, in different forms. And one of those forms is a serekh — a Horus name, an older and more obscure way of writing a king than the cartouche.

In 1837, Egyptology was barely fifteen years old. The idea that a pharaoh held five separate names in several different formats was not general knowledge. So how would Vyse's hired hands have known to include an obscure Horus-name variant?
The honest answer is that they might not have needed to know it themselves. Khufu's Horus name had already been published. Léon de Laborde drew a rock relief at Wadi Maghara in the Sinai in 1828 and published it in Voyage de l'Arabie Pétrée in 1830 — nine years before Vyse picked up a chisel. It shows a cartouche reading "Khnumkhufui, the great god," flanked by Thoth and Horus. It's confirmed as Khufu's by the standard scholarly survey of the site. The original relief is now destroyed; Laborde's drawing is one of the last records of it.

So it's contested whether "Hor Medjedu" proves Vyse couldn't have known it, or whether the relevant sourcebook was sitting on a shelf he had access to the whole time. That's a live academic argument, not a fringe theory against a settled field.
The verdict
Whichever way the forgery question falls, one fact is not in dispute. In nearly two hundred years, nobody has ever subjected these marks to instrumental testing. No pigment analysis. No confirmed search for a binder. No independent chemical dating. The chronological anchor for Egypt's most famous monument rests on stylistic comparison and the word of a colonel with a documented cash crisis.
Compare that to what modern science has done nearby, almost by accident. In 1872 an engineer pulled a scrap of cedar out of a shaft in the Queen's Chamber. It sat forgotten in a museum in Aberdeen for over a century, was rediscovered in 2020, and finally radiocarbon dated: 3341–3094 BC, several centuries older than Khufu's reign. Nobody claims this proves the pyramid predates him — old wood gets reused. But it's a real, dated, independently tested object from inside the monument. The paint that supposedly names its builder has never been offered the same courtesy.
That's the actual scandal. Not necessarily fraud. Negligence — a field that decided, two centuries ago, that a piece of evidence was too important to question, and then never went back and checked.
